Huntington Beach City School District (HBCSD) proudly announces that Mrs. Laura Coward of Eader Elementary School has been named the 2026 Teacher of the Year. This recognition celebrates educators who go above and beyond their daily responsibilities to inspire students, support colleagues, and positively impact the school community.
For 15 years, Laura Coward has dedicated herself to creating a classroom environment where curiosity thrives, challenges are embraced, and students feel empowered to learn. Her approach ensures that every child in her classroom feels seen, heard, and valued, fostering a love of learning beyond the school walls. Her passion for education is evident in her engaging, student-centered teaching methods. Whether leading a hands-on science experiment, incorporating real-world connections into lessons, or encouraging students to explore different perspectives through creative discussions, she cultivates an environment where learning is an adventure. Her commitment to differentiated instruction ensures that every student receives the support they need to grow academically and personally.
“The best thing about being a teacher is instilling the love of learning and watching students' curiosity ignite their passion for knowledge,” said Laura. “Building relationships with students and families with a common goal: building confidence, independence, and a love of learning is incredibly fulfilling.”
Beyond her work in the classroom, Laura plays a strong role in strengthening school culture and student leadership. As the advisor for Eader’s Student Council Eader Leaders, she empowers students to take initiative, promote kindness, and engage in meaningful service projects. Her leadership has inspired students to organize fundraising efforts, volunteer at school events, and spearhead community service initiatives, fostering a sense of responsibility and civic engagement at a young age. Laura’s dedication extends to mentoring colleagues as well. As a Master Teacher Mentor, she has supported new educators by providing guidance on lesson planning, instructional strategies, and classroom management. She is also a key contributor to districtwide initiatives, serving on the AI Task Force & Technology Committee, where she helps integrate innovative learning tools into the classroom.
At the heart of Laura’s teaching philosophy is the belief that learning is about progress, not perfection. She instills in her students the confidence to take risks, embrace challenges, and see mistakes as opportunities for growth.
“I want my students to have a passion for knowledge, take risks, and embrace challenges,” she shared. “Learning isn't just about getting the right answer, but persevering, thinking critically, and growing from every experience. True success comes from the willingness to explore and make mistakes.”
One particularly powerful moment in her career came when she helped a student who struggled with confidence and participation. Through patience, encouragement, and structured support, Laura watched the student overcome their fears and emerge as a leader in the classroom, later earning the ‘Every Student Succeeding’ award from the district.
Her impact is felt in her students' success and the relationships she builds with families and the broader school community. She believes that strong partnerships between teachers, parents, and students create the foundation for lasting educational success.
The District leadership and administrators surprised Laura at her school site, celebrating her well-earned achievement with colleagues and students. She will also be formally recognized by the HBCSD Board of Trustees at the May Board meeting and honored at the 2026 Orange County Teachers of the Year Awards annual celebration.
“We are proud to recognize Laura Coward as HBCSD’s Teacher of the Year,” said Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources Mr. Robert Miller. “Laura exemplifies the dedication, innovation, and passion that define great educators. Her commitment to student success and her ability to inspire those around her make her truly deserving of this honor.”
Congratulations to Mrs. Laura Coward for her outstanding contributions to the HBCSD community. Her dedication to education continues to make a lasting difference in the lives of her students and colleagues.
